1.1       What are the steps involved in getting hosted Exchange?

1.2       Can I upgrade my account at anytime?

Yes, you can upgrade your account at any time by contacting us at [email protected] or calling us on 01784 223 100.

1.3       Can I have a free trial?

We can offer 30 day trials of hosted Exchange.  If you’re unhappy with our service you can cancel anytime within the first month and we will refund your initial payment. 

1.4       What is the minimum term?

The minimum term is 1 month.

1.5       I don’t have a domain name. Do I need one?

You will need a domain name to truly benefit from Hosted Exchange.  We can also help you by providing a domain name.

1.6       Do we need to provide our own licenses?

No, we organize licensing as part of the service, and set up hosted Exchange for your users.

1.7       Do I need a VPN to connect to Hosted Exchange?

No. With Windows XP (or higher) and Outlook 2003 (or higher), Windows uses a protocol called RPC over HTTPS. This service is now called Outlook Anywhere, which does away with the need for a VPN.

1.8       What happens to my current POP3/Exchange/Outlook e-mails?

After you sign up, you can contact Alchemy support and we can help you  migrate your existing mails from your current mailbox to our Hosted Exchange Server. There may be an additional charge for this service.

1.9       Are there mailbox storage limits? If so, what happens when they are exceeded?

Every mailbox comes with a set amount of storage included in the base monthly fee, which you select for your organization. The standard is 1GB per mail box with the option of increasing this per GB at an additional cost. You will receive warning messages in Outlook before you run out of mailbox space.

1.10       Why does Hosted Exchange save me money?

Hosted Exchange from Alchemy is more cost-effective than an in-house installation because you receive the same benefits at a lower cost. You save by not buying hardware or software, and by not employingor subcontracting an Exchange administration specialist. All you pay is a set monthly fee.

1.11     Which Version of Microsoft Hosted Exchange do you offer?

We currently offer Microsoft  Exchange Server 2007.

1.12     Where is the email stored?

By default, all your information is stored on our secure servers, including your personal folders. You can therefore use Outlook from two different locations (such as your desktop PC and your Laptop), and always see the same information for your email account. Should you require, you can download a copy of your data and store it locally.

1.13     Do I get Virus and Spam  Email Filtering?

Yes. Anti-Virus and Anti-Spam feature is included. All mail that reaches our Exchange Servers have to go through our redundant Shell-IX Enterprise grade Anti-Virus and Anti-Spam filtering servers.

1.14  How do I access Outlook Web Access?

1.15  What do I need to do after my account is set up?

Alchemy will set up your Hosted Exchange Account.

In order for email to go to our servers, you will need to set your domain to point to our servers.

We can help you and talk you through this requirement or you can do this yourself as per the following:

Please create the following DNS entries for your domain.

MX-Record

  • your_domain_with_us.com -> shellixv2.alchemysys.net priority 10

You also need to add the “CName” record for autodiscover.yourdomainname.com to autosetup.alchemysupport.net

1.16  How many devices can I sync with one mail box?

You can sync as many devices as you want; with your mailbox.

1.17  How can I add/delete users?

You can add/delete users at any time by emailing [email protected] or calling us on 01784 223 100.

1.18  Is there a message size limit?

Yes. 25MB. If your messages are bigger than 25MB then you have one of the following options:

  1. Reduce the message size, either by breaking up attachments into multiple emails or compress the attachments(.zip/.rar).
  2. A great solution is to send the file with a file delivery service, which will email a link to download the file or provide a link you can cut-and-paste into an email. You can use one of the following:

However, please bear in mind that the recipients email also must allow minimum 25MB attachments in.

We provide a high level of service with a guaranteed 99.8% availability. In the unlikely event that the service fails to meet the guarantee levels, service credits are available

1.21  Do you offer Exchange for mobile devices. If so what devices can be used?

Yes. Alchemy provides mobile access to many mobile phones including, iPhone, BlackBerry, Windows Mobile, Symbian and Android devices, which has an internet connection. Some options have additional costs.

1.22  What are the options for accessing mails? Do you provide a web-based interface?

Hosted Exchange is available with POP, IMAP and Outlook Web Access and mobile devices. Yes, we do provide a web-based interface at https://hostedmail.alchemysupport.net/owa

1.23  How is the service priced, and how much does it cost? 

Hosted Exchange is priced on per user, per month basis starting from £2.99. Alchemy does not offer a fixed or restricted  Exchange service as all customers are different. 1.24  Can I share emails between users?

Yes, you can share emails in your Public Folder which is an optional extra of £10 per month for 10GB

1.25  Is there a firewall in place on your Hosted Exchange Platform?

Yes. It is included in the package at no extra cost. All the Exchange Servers sit behind enterprise-grade Firewalls

1.26  Can I work on my emails off-line?

Yes. You can download your email and documents to your local computer (e.g. via Outlook). You can then organize and work on them off-line, updating the documents or composing your replies. When you next connect to the Hosted Exchange Platform, any outgoing messages will be sent and the folder views synchronized

1.27  Are my emails backed up and for how long?
